In Florida, how does a construction subcontractor make sure they are protected by the project's Payment Bond?

We are subcontractors on a waste water plant improvement project in Florida. The GC is posting a Payment Bond, but it just lists the total project fee and the plant owner (a municipality). How do we, and our suppliers, make sure we are protected by that Payment Bond? Do we file Liens before starting work? Do we need to provide the owner and GC with some kind of Notice of Intent to File a Lien?

That's a great question, and obtaining a copy of the bond (or at least the requisite bonding information) can be a chore on public jobs. Florida makes the process relatively clear, though. In Florida, a claimant can apply for a copy of the bond. Specifically, an application for that information should be sent to the governmental entity who contracted for the improvement. Upon receiving such an application, the public entity must provide a copy of the contractor's bond for the project.
